article imageYoungest bullfighter in Mexico gets battered by the bull

Mexico - Michel "Michelito" Lagravere, 12, became yesterday the youngest bullfighter to appear at the Monumental Bullring (Plaza de Toros) in Mexico City. After killing his first bull, he was caught by the second animal and left the Plaza with injuries.
Michelito, from Mérida, Mexico, has been a “toreador” since four years old. His father, the French matador Michel Lagravere, was very pleased and proud with his young son’s presentation at the bullring, particularly because he only suffered minor bruises in his encounter with the 385 Kg beast.
The event began as planned for the French-Mexican boy who had no trouble killing his first bull of more than 400 kilos. However, as he prepared to kill the second, an unexpected setback dropped him to the ground. The bull pushed him around and shook the boy with his head. Fortunately, no horn goring took place. Michelito slipped away by rolling down over the sand until his aides managed to distract the bull.
I am very happy because I made a good kill with the first bull Said the young matador while he was leaving the bullring on a stretcher. A medical examination revealed that the boy only suffered minor bruises to his chest.
The presence of this boy in a bullring had renewed the debate on both the cruelty of bull-fighting and the participation of children in this high-risk activity. In Spain and France, children must be at least 16 before they can risk their life in front of a bull.
Michelito, who last year became the youngest bullfighter to kill 6 bulls in a single bullfighting event in Mérida, insists in continuing his dangerous performances and defiantly states:
Opponents of the “corridas” should not stick their noses into things they do not like.
