Athena's Home Novelties, one of the country's premier adult novelty companies has announced bra collection drives at 2010 Pride Events in support of Athena's Cup, a fundraiser sponsored by Athena's which will help to increase breast cancer awareness while attempting to break the current bra-chain Guinness World Record.
Funds collected at Pride events will support Athena's Cup, benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Sharon Epstein of Athena's said over "21,000 bras have been collected to-date and that organizers are encouraging their communities to empty drawers and donate worn bras to Athena's Cup at their local Pride events. Convenient collection points (listed below) have been set up at Pride events in several cities from Maine to Florida."
Epstein said Athena's have been in business over 12 years and this is their first year of holding this fundraiser and bra collecting event. She said you can follow their progress on the Bra-ometer on the Athena's Cup web site.
In honor and memory of breast cancer survivors, donors are encouraged to be creative and decorate the donated bra's and to write the names of a loved one or other meaningful inscriptions on each bra prior to donating.
"We are so grateful for the support of the Pride community. With breast cancer affecting one out of every eight women in the United States, there are so few of us who don't know someone affected by the disease," said Jennifer Jolicoeur, Mother Goddess and President of Athena's Home Novelties.
"Each of us, men and women, need to take an active role in preserving our good health and through Athena's Cup we are encouraging everyone to take the necessary steps for early detection and treatment."
Organizers of Athena's Cup hope to reach their goal of 169,000 bras by October 2010 to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout the campaign, the bra-chain will be displayed at various events across the country including the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation's 5th Annual Flames of Hope "Celebration of Life" in Providence, RI on October 9th and the 2010 Autumnfest, an annual festival held in Woonsocket, RI each Columbus Day weekend, where it will be judged by a Guinness World Record professional. Together, the hooked bras have the potential to stretch up to 100 miles. Portions of the bra chain will be available for display throughout the country upon request.
"Breast cancer is a disease that has touched everyone in this country and around the world. The Athena's Cup event was created for a fun way to raise money for research and to increase breast cancer awareness for screening, self-screening and yearly mammograms." said Epstein.
She added that many other events are being scheduled weekly and can be found on the Athena's Cup blog.
Metal for Mammories breast cancer benefit concert, Saturday, June 5 at Lucky Dog Music Hall in Worcester, MA, will support the Athena’s Cup national breast cancer awareness campaign with all proceeds being raised for cause. The event will include an evening of live music performances, raffles and prizes. Attendees are encouraged to show their support by bringing along their old bras for donation.
Pride organizers interested in setting up a collection point at their local events should contact Sharon Epstein at 1-877-ATHENAS ext. 14 or for more information.
