Toronto - On Saturday, Project: Humanity hosted Shirts Off 2010, their annual clothing drive, at Archeo Trattoria in the Distillery District in Toronto.
The event featured some of Toronto's finest musicians, poets and dancers including Peter Katz, Tomy Bewick, Kaitlin Torrence, Corrina Keeling, Reza Jacobs, Quentin Verecitty, Ben Clost, Amanda Storms and DJ Floh Back.
By all accounts the Project: Humanity event was a success. Antonio Cayonne said on Monday via email, "The event was beautiful, thanks largely to our artists. Any event where the artists are as committed, and open as they were last night will certainly affect and inspire an audience. Performers - Thank you.
To the audience, the community - you are the other part of the equation.
Your willingness to participate in music, dance, and poetry over the course of a night is truly astounding. It allows us all to push the boundaries of what art can be and its just so fun to watch it all together."
Already the donations are being sent to those in direct need of the garments. This year some of the children's and infant's clothing are being sent to Chile, where relief efforts have been hampered by ground forces and not all the supplies have been able to get to those that need them. Project Humanity has an "inside man" who is making sure that the clothing will be given to those in the most need.
The Chile connection came when an email was sent to one of the members of the group from her father.
"I'm not well with this sadness and anguish that I'm seeing. A big part of Chile is crying like always. Even nature has found a way to punish even the most humble of people. It reminds me of the war and all I want to do is help in anyway possible. Even at this moment, I've come to check my e-mail and the Tremors still haven't stopped."
He reported to his daughter that some organizations were picking through donated clothes for themselves or in other cases just dumping them in the dirt so people had to scavenge for them. He then asked his children to send clothing through him to World Vision Chile.
