article image80-year-old man kills intruder

By Michael Bearak     May 26, 2010 in Crime
A Chicago man living on the west-side of the city shot and killed an armed intruder in his home. The home owner is also 80-years old.
Around 5:30 Wednesday morning an 80-year-old couple confronted an armed intruder who obtained entry into the couple's home through a backdoor.
According to the police there was a struggle where the intruder's gun was discharged, but it was the homeowner who made the fatal shot.
The intruder's body was found slumped over in on the back-porch. According to the Chicago Sun Times it took four hours to have the body removed.
According to neighbors of the Garfield Park community break-ins have become far to common place. One neighbor, Shaquite Johnson, the couple are "heroes" and that because of their actions there is one less criminal on the streets.
Other neighbors describe the couple as quiet who keep to themselves and that they actually need canes to get around.
According to Curtis Thompson, who lives next-door to the couple, "It's a good thing they had a gun, or they might be dead."
The assailant was described in his mid-30's. Police have not pressed charges yet, except that the city has a statute on the record banning handguns. That statute is currently under review with the U.S. Supreme Court. Joel Brodsky has stepped forward pro bono to defend the couple should be face charges.
According to Brodsky, "Self-defense isn't just a right, it's a duty. If this man is prosecuted for saving his own life it's not just a travesty, it's justice turned inside out."
