Television host and author Art Linkletter has died in Los Angeles at his home, according to his son-in-law Art Hershey. He was 97.
Born Gordon Arthur Kelly to an unwed mother in Saskatchewan Linkletter was put up for adoption as a baby. While still a young boy he moved with his adoptive parents, Mary and Pastor Fulton John Linkletter to the United States. As a young man he spent time as a hobo after his father forced him to take odd jobs reports the LA Times.
Linkletter was a popular host of the show House Party that ran on CBS for 25 years on both radio and television. He was most famous of interviewing children on House Party and a later show Kids Say the Darndest Things.
Linkletter was married to wife Lois in 1935. Linkletter was father to five whom he called the Links in his many books. One of his daughters, Diane died from suicide in 1969. Her death lead Linkletter to become a crusader against drugs. Son Robert died in a car accident in 1980 and son Jack died at the age of 70 of cancer in 2007.
He is survived by wife Lois and their daughters daughters Dawn and Sharon.
