In the second miraculous escape from harm at a Melbourne railway station within a year, another baby in his pram rolls off the platform in front of an oncoming train.
Last October a mother watched in horror as the pram with her son rolled away from her, fell off the platform and was hit by a train. That baby escaped unharmed despite being pushed along the track for 30 meters.
According to Sky News, the latest accident involved a 15-month-old child, who was in the care of his grandmother. After falling into the path of the train and being pushed along the tracks, the child escaped with only some cuts and grazes.
This happened at Melbourne's Tooronga station, where the platforms are sloped towards the train tracks in order to help with drainage. This design has been banned, and most other stations have altered their platforms to make them level.
The train driver quickly hit the brakes and pulled the baby out from under the train. Paramedics took the child to the Royal Children's Hospital, where his mother met him. The grandmother was "left severely shaken."
The pram was a double buggy, but the baby's older brother was out standing beside it before it rolled away.
Paramedic Kate Jessop said:
"It’s just the most miraculous circumstances that he is as uninjured as he is. It is absolutely amazing he isn't more injured.
"I’ve spoken to the child’s grandma now and all she recalls is seeing the pram on the platform and then next time she turned around and she saw it on the tracks.
"She has had an incredible fright. I was assuming the worst and had those awful pictures in my head of a child underneath a train."
