The Grammy Award-winning rapper faces potential discipline after jail officers found a charger and headphones for a digital music player stashed in a potato chip bag in his cell Monday, city Correction Department spokesman Stephen Morello said.
The items are considered contraband, as inmates can listen to music only on radios and headphones sold at the jail commissary. Lil Wayne's lawyer, Stacey Richman, had no immediate comment Thursday.
Officers said the music player itself turned up in another inmate's nearby cell. Both men were charged with infractions that aren't crimes and will be subject to a jail disciplinary process, not a court. Punishments can include being segregated from other inmates, the report added.
The popular American rapper
started his prison term last March for a case that stemmed from a 2007 traffic stop of his tour bus in New York when authorities said they smelled marijuana, and as they approached, he tossed aside a bag with a loaded .40-caliber handgun.
Before the start of his prison term, his lawyer said the 27-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer will be held in protective custody, separate from common prisoners.
Lil Wayne came back to his native New Orleans to do a concert for his hometown fans in what he called his farewell tour before the start of his jail term.
"I'm nothing without you," he told the screaming crowd last year at the New Orleans Arena after opening the concert with "A Milli," which earned him a Grammy for best rap solo in 2008.
