Montreal - Shogun didn't leave it in the judges' hands this time. Rua delivered a decisive knockout of Lyoto Machida to take the light heavyweight championship belt.
Leaving it into someone else's hands was not an option. Instead, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua used his heavy hands to pound away a first round knockout victory.
The 28 year old Rua (19-4) crushed Machida with an overhand right and quickly mounted to finish off the fellow Brazilian with strikes.
"When I connected with the overhand right punch (while) standing up I already noticed that he was going out," said the new champion
Rua's earned the Knockout of the Night and paid him an additional $65, 000.
Many believed that the Shogun had won their previous encounter. Machida, however, won by decision at UFC 104.
In the co-main event, Josh Koschek defeated Paul Daley in a welterweight match, but ended in a wild melee as a frustrated Daley sucker punched Koscheck after the fight was over.
Referee Dan Miragliotta threw Daley against the cage and Dana White entered to lambaste the fighter.
“He’s done. I don’t give a (expletive) if he’s the best 170-pounder in the world. He’ll never come back here again,” said White in the Montreal Gazette.
Here are the results earlier in the evening,
Middleweight bout: Alan Belcher defeated Patrick Cote via submission (rear naked choke) at 3:25 of round 2.
Heavyweight bout: Matt Mitrione defeated Kimbo Slice via TKO (punches) at 4:24 of round 2.
Lightweight bout: Jeremy Stephens defeated Sam Stout via split decision (30-27, 29-28, 28-29).
Welterweight bout: Josh Koscheck defeated Paul Daley via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
