The United States House of Representatives has voted to change the name of the United States Navy, which officially is called "Department of the Navy."
In an effort to recognize the full scope of the United States' Navy or the Department of the Navy, the House of Representatives voted Tuesday to change the Navy's formal name.
Historically, the Marines have been a part of the Department of the Navy, sort of tucked away. Now, in an effort to give them more recognition, the House approved a measure to rename the Department of the Navy to the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.
The
Marine's hymn highlights it perfectly with the line, “fight our country’s battles in the air, on land and sea.”
Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., was one of the main authors of the bill and represents Camp Lejune on the North Carolina coast outside of Jacksonville. Jones feels the name change accurately describes the scope of the department and recognizes the Marines' efforts and contributions.
