Two great American boxers, one of them undefeated in his entire boxing career and the other a current world champion, collide Saturday night in Las Vegas Nevada as Shane Mosley tries to put a black mark on Floyd Mayweather's immaculate boxing record.
Undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr squares off with fellow American boxer and WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mayweather, who has 40 professional fights to his record with 28 knock outs, enters the ring as 4-1 favorite to win over Mosley who is currently the WBA welterweight champion.
The undefeated boxer has retired from professional boxing more than two years ago with an unblemished record but came back to face Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico in what boxing fans saw as Mayweather's tune-up fight for his much-talked about match with Filipino boxer and current pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao
Negotiations for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight fell through after both camps failed to agree on the drug testing protocol Mayweather has demanded before signing up with Pacquiao. Mayweather's camp believed then that Pacquiao was taking steroids or performance enhancing drugs which Pacquiao denied, saying he has pass all tests conducted by the Nevada sports regulating agency.
The failed Pacquiao-Mayweather fight was scheduled last March 13 in Las Vegas Nevada. The date was kept by Pacquiao but he took on Joshua Clottey of Ghana which was staged at the huge Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Pacquiao won via a unanimous decision but boxing fans were unhappy of the way Clottey behaved inside the ring as he was more concerned about his defenses than engaging the Filipino boxer.
Mosley is determined to break and end Mayweather's winning streak saying he wants to be remembered as the boxer who erased Mayweather's zero loss record.
Mosley, who has
won world titles in three weight divisions, says he doesn't have to beat Mayweather to prove anything to himself but knows he must win Saturday to prove to the world and his critics what he has continued to preach for the past two years, that he's the best pound-for-pound fighter despite the argument that that mythical title is a two-man race between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
The
33-year-old Mayweather weighed 146 pounds. Mosley, age 38, was 147 pounds in the weigh in held at the MGM in Las Vegas, the site of tomorrow night's tussle. Some will recall Mayweather spurred some drama when he came in heavy for his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez last May. The contract called for the fighters to weigh 144 or less, and Mayweather weighed 146 pounds, and had to pay off JMM for the extra poundage.
In the meantime, Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao will act as commentator and analyst for the Mayweather-Mosley fight, along with sportswriters Quinito Henson and Chino Trinidad who are hosting the show in the Philippines for GMA TV and Solar Sports.
The winner of the Saturday night boxing event will have a greater chance of facing pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao for this year's biggest boxing event.
