It's the worst kind of bad news any parent can ever receive - your child dead, killed in a car accident. That's the news police delivered Alfred and Geri Esposito on April 24th.
Saturday morning, Alfred and Geri were told their son and a passenger were both dead after a collision with a tractor-trailer. Alfred Freddy Esposito III, otherwise known as "Freddy," was driving, State police told the shocked parents. Mrs. Esposito later
said,
"It didn't make sense to me, but I was numb. Freddy doesn't drive anywhere. He had a car accident once. It was bad. He drives like a little old lady now. You know, he makes sure he follows the letter of the law. It didn't make sense that he was driving, but that's what they said."
Two men did
perish in a tragic accident in Pennsylvania, and another seriously injured. All three were Freddy's fraternity brothers. Somehow, the driver had Freddy's identification, and police identified the deceased as Freddy. The police have "
expressed regret" for the mistake.
Before the error was straightened out, Alfred and Geri had contacted family members with the devastating news, and the family spent about an hour and a half grieving for the young man.
Freddy, who lives in the Bronx with his older brother Christopher, was actually home safe and sound - and sound asleep. But the family didn't know that, until Christopher found Freddy, sleeping on a couch. Christopher initially thought he was seeing a ghost of Freddy, but that impression passed quickly.
26 year old Freddy told press he was devastated to learn of the fates of his friends. The family is now grieving the deaths of the two young men.
As for the police? The family is very forgiving, just happy to know their beloved is alive. They have no plans for taking any action for the error.
