article imageCatholic bishop Vangheluwe may have made more victims

Child psychiatrist Peter Adriaenssens does not know if bishop Vangheluwe made more victims, but he considers this a real possibility.
"The bishop has told me categorically that there would not be any other stories and that there is only one victim, but I have lots of experience and I am not naive", says Adriaenssens. "The possibility that there are several victims is real".
However, De standaard, a leading Dutch-language newspaper in Belgium, also reports that there are elements that make him hesitate. "Never before have I met a perpetrator who admitted everything so rapidly and so completely without looking for excuses. But then, the complaints were so clear that there was only one reply possible".
The commission that investigates sexual abuse in the Church, of which psychiatrist Adriaenssens is the president, will also investigate whether Vangheluwe has tried to cover up other abuse cases.
"The commission is indeed worried about the way he has handled other files. This must now be a part of this investigation."
At least one case is known in which a perpetrator was made a deacon by Vangheluwe, after the facts.
