Santiago - Three earthquakes of diverse intensity occurred this morning in Chile. Northern and Central-South regions of Chile were affected. The tremors caused much alarm, but no damage.
An earthquake 4.9-degree Richter was recorded at 03:25 AM, with its epicenter 50 kilometers from the coastal city of Lebu, at a depth of 36 km.
At 06:03 AM another stronger quake, 5.9 Richter, hit an extensive area of Chile. As reported by the USGS, the epicenter was on land, 65 kilometers south of Concepcion, with a depth of 35 kilometers. The quake alarmed the people of Concepción, Talca and many others that suffered an 8.8 Richter earthquake last February 27. The quake caused blackouts in Concepción and neighboring municipalities, but the situation returned to normal quickly.
The United States Geological Service (USGS) had initially reported the quake at a magnitude of 6.1 Richter. This was later corrected to a magnitude of 5.9 degrees.
A third tremor of magnitude 4.7 Richter occurred at 06:14 AM and shook the northern Chilean Region of Tarapacá. The epicenter was located at a depth of 131 Km, 120 Km northeast of Arica, a city located next to the border with Perú.
