article imageRepublican Huckabee: Gay marriage like incest, polygamy

By Andrew John     Apr 14, 2010 in Politics
Former Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee says allowing gay people to marry is akin to legalizing incest, drug use, and polygamy.
He has also said of adoption of children by same-sex couples: “Children are not puppies.”
Huckabee (54), who is also a possible candidate for the 2012 election, was speaking to journalism students at the College of New Jersey in Ewing last week in an interview that was published last night (Tuesday).
He said not all groups in society need to be accommodated if their lifestyle is outside of “the ideal.”
“That,” he said, “would be like saying, ‘Well there are a lot of people who like to use drugs so let’s go ahead and accommodate those who want to use drugs. There are some people who believe in incest, so we should accommodate them. There are people who believe in polygamy, should we accommodate them?’
“Why do you get to choose that two men are OK but one man and three women aren’t OK?” he asked students.
“I don’t have to prove that marriage is a man and a woman in a relationship for life. They have to prove that two men can have an equally definable relationship called marriage, and somehow that that can mean the same thing.”
Since the transcript of the interview was published, Huckabee has said in a statement: “I do not believe we should change the traditional definition of marriage.” The students were sensationalizing his comments, he says, as he feels his views are “well-known and hardly unusual views of same-sex marriage.”
Huckabee told the Associated Press in 1992: “I feel homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural, and sinful lifestyle.”
He described AIDS patients as “carriers of this plague,” and added that they should be isolated, according to Pink News.
While he was Governor of Arkansas he said: “Marriage has historically never meant anything other than a man and a woman. It has never meant two men, two women, a man and his pet, or a man and a whole herd of pets.”
When Huckabee was 21, he was on the staff of televangelist James Robinson, who has said of Huckabee: “His convictions shape his character and his character will shape his policies. His whole life has been shaped by moral absolutes.”
Huckabee is known to believe in biblical inerrancy, i.e. that every word of the Bible is true (in spite of its inconsistencies). In 1989 he ran against the Rev. Dr Ronnie Floyd of Springdale for the presidency of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention.
