article imagePorn with feeling: World’s first Braille erotica published

By Andrew John     Apr 14, 2010 in Entertainment
What is believed to be the world’s first softcore-porn book for the blind has been produced by an expert in “tactile graphics.” But she expects a conservative reaction.
The handmade book, which has been produced by the photographer Lisa J. Murphy, features 17 raised images of naked figures and erotic writing in Braille.
In 1995, Playboy produced an issue of its magazine with text in Braille, but Murphy’s book, Tactile Mind, is thought to be the first of its kind.
“There are no books of tactile pictures of nudes for adults, at least the last time I looked around,” she says. “We’re breaking new ground. Playboy has [had] Braille wording, but there are no pictures.”
The book’s explicit softcore images were made in clay before being covered with plastic in a labour-intensive process that took some 50 hours to complete, according to the Toronto Star.
Murphy added: “I was just interested in the challenge. When you’re dealing with people who can read Braille with their fingertips, they can feel every error.”
Murphy holds a certificate in tactile graphics from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. However, asked by the Toronto Star whether the institute would support her book, Murphy said: “I think they might be a little conservative.”
