Washington - For the first time in the history of the United States, a President has ordered the assassination of an American citizen. Barack Obama ordered the Central Intelligence Agency to kill Anwar al-Awlaki.
A report shows that United States President Barack Obama ordered the assassination of American citizen Anwar al-Awlaki over the suspected links to the failed Christmas Day bombing in Detroit and the Fort Hood massacre, according to the Telegraph.
Al-Awlaki is a Yemeni cleric who was born in New Mexico and worked as an imam in Virginia before moving to Yemen. The latest report suggests he moved from being a cleric to an operative for al-Qaeda in Yemen, reports Press TV.
The President’s decision to add him to the CIA and military hit-list had to be reviewed by the National Security Council because of his citizenship but Obama administration officials argued that he posted a direct threat to the U.S. and believe Americans who side with the enemy are not “entitled to special protections.”
Common Dreams reports that the American Civil Liberties Union urged the government to make the details about the targeted killing program available to the general public.
“Today's report raises serious questions about the legal standards that govern targeted killings. The American public deserves to know what standard the government uses and how much evidence is required when it decides, in the name of self-defense or otherwise, to place U.S. citizens on a kill list,” said Jonathan Manes, legal fellow with the ACLU National Security Project.
In February, reports the World Socialist Website, the killing of American citizens by the executive branch became policy by the Obama administration’s director of national intelligence, Dennis C. Blair.
“We take direct actions against terrorists in the intelligence community. If we think that direct action will involve killing an American, we get specific permission to do that,” said Blair in Congressional testimony.
On Tuesday, the Democratic chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee went as far as saying that al-Awlaki was the person who would be the number one person and terrorist in terms of threats against the U.S..
Al-Awlaki’s father defended him and said that he’s not Usama bin Laden, “I am now afraid of what they will do with my son, he’s not Usama Bin Laden, they want to make something out of him that he’s not.”
