article imageTennis great Martina Navratilova says she has breast cancer

By Joan Firstenberg     Apr 7, 2010 in Sports
Tennis star Martini Navratilova is in a fight for her life after being diagnosed with breast cancer. But she says although the news was devastating, she intends to live.
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova admitted on Good Morning America today that she has breast cancer. She was diagnosed in February and calls it her "personal 9/11". She told GMA that she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) only in one breast. The diagnosis means the cancer has been caught early.
Three weeks ago the 53-year old Ms Navratilova underwent a lumpectomy to remove the cancerous tissue, and doctors told her the cancer luckily had not spread in her body to her lymph nodes.
She is scheduled to undergo six weeks of radiation in May and she's hoping to have it in Paris, so she will be able to participate in the French Open Tennis Games, where she is a commentator.
Ms Navratilova says doctors told her there is only a "very small chance of it coming back."
When she was diagnosed, she said,"I was feeling absolutely 100 percent fine,"
She says finding out she had cancer was a devastating shock.
"I'm this healthy person, I've been healthy all my life, and all of a sudden I have cancer, are you kidding me?"
