Five years ago Patrick McDermott vanished without a trace. The former lover of Olivia Newton-John was thought to have drowned during a boating accident. Reports have surfaced that McDermott is alive and well in Mexico.
The search to find Patrick McDermott has finally ended. For five years it was thought that he had perished during a fishing trip gone bad off the coast of California.
McDermott had gone out on the boat Freedom for a fishing trip shortly after breaking up with Newton-John in 2005. He was reported missing on July 6, 2005 after failing to show up for a family event. In November 2008 the Coast Guard concluded that he had most likely drowned but doubts lingered that he had faked his death. At the time of his disappearance McDermott was in debt, including $8,000 owed for child support.
At the time Newton-John was said to be heartbroken over the presumed death.
NBC's Dateline hired private investigators to find McDermott after reports came out in Mexico that he was alive. Phillip Klein, the lead investigator is planning a book on the search. On Thursday he told the Daily Telegraph that the search is over as McDermott has proven beyond reasonable doubt that he is among the living.
NJ.com says that the investigation broke after a web site was set up to track where McDermott was. McDermott is alleged to have logged into the site regularly.
"Mr. McDermott's wishes, according to his counsel, is not to be 'hounded' any longer by investigators or the media," Klein says.
According to SleekGossip it has been alleged that McDermott faked his death so that his son could collect on a life insurance policy.
