Toronto - Libraries in the city of Toronto are seeking $300,000 to begin a collection of circulating video games in an upcoming gaming program across many branches in the city.
In an initiative to draw more children to libraries, the Toronto Public Library in seeking $300,000 to collect video games in order to start an upcoming gaming programs in at least eight branches across the Toronto area, according to the Toronto Star.
The Toronto Public Library argues that kids could actually learn literacy and problem-solving skills through the games themselves.
“It may be the only time a young person comes in. It can act as a magnet to attract people. Once we get them in there, you can be darn sure that our librarians will be hard at work to introduce them to everything else the library can offer,” said City Councillor Adam Vaughn, who also a members on the public library’s board.
Metro News reports that there will be approximately 150 titles but the game selection is still being debated upon. Should the games be family oriented such as dance competitions or violent games like the smash-hit Grand Theft Auto?
“The libraries have to really consider the social implications of what they’re offering. It could be great ... It’s just making sure it’s done in a healthy way,” said Bruce Ballon, head of the clinic at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health.
However, if the funding is not raised then the games and consoles would not be purchased this year.
