By Sandy Sand     Mar 24, 2010 in Crime
A San Diego, California, judge excoriated television’s Dr. Phil as a “terrible, terrible man” during the sentencing of a husband, wife team of shoplifters.
Federal judge Irma Gonzalez sentenced Matthew Eaton, 34 , to 29 months in jail and his wife, Laura Eaton, 27, both of San Marcos, to a lesser sentence of 12 months in jail for shoplifting and conspiracy to traffic in stolen goods across state lines.
The pair’s sentences were handed down yesterday after both pled guilty.
The Eatons appeared on Dr. Phil McGraw’s television show where they confessed to hitting on a scheme to travel to different states, frequently with their children, stealing merchandise and selling the stolen goods on the Internet.
The couple reportedly earned up to $100,000 a year selling the stolen merchandise, mostly toys, online.
At the time of their arrest 11 months ago, authorities seized 500 boxes of stolen goods from their home.
In handing down the sentence, Gonzalez described Dr. Phil as a “terrible, terrible man” and commented, “what a charlatan this man is.”
In hurling her criticisms at the television shrink, Gonzalez said:
"… that McGraw did not, in fact, offer any help to the couple, belying the premise of his show.
