Saturday marked day three of the NCAA college basketball tournament and it was a day that saw upsets early and then leading into the night. Most notably, Northern Iowa took out number-one seed Kanas.
There are always upsets in the NCAA tournament, it wouldn't be "March Madness" if it was a clear and easy road for top seeded teams to get to the finals. Still, Saturday saw one of the biggest upsets in recent years as Northern Iowa knocked off the tournament's top-seeded team the Kansas Jayhawks.
Northern Iowa is a number 9 seed in the tournament and beating a number 1 in the second round was something that hadn't been done since 2004 when it happened twice in the tournament. Still, history was thrown out the window today as Northern Iowa lead almost entire game. As a matter of fact they took the lead 1 minute and 2 seconds into the game and never looked back. Their largest lead was 12 on the Jayhawks, and while Kansas did make a run at the Panthers it wasn't enough to catch them.
For the Panthers they made 40 percent of their field goals, but what really helped them was their 3-point shooting at just shy of 35 percent and their free throws at 84.2 percent hitting 16 of 19. Northern Iowa made use of their bench as well bringing in five players from the bench. They also ran a fairly small rotation as their starting center Jordan Eglseder saw only 18 minutes of playing time, but chipped in 14 points at the same time.
The Jayhawks had four players in double figures, but that was not enough as they leaned heavily on their starters with Sherron Collins playing all but two minutes during the game.
While the Jayhawks will have to go home, Northern Iowa will face the winner of the Michigan State/Maryland game next week in the Sweet 16.
