article imageOp-Ed: Mayweather May Choose Not to Fight Pacquiao to Keep His Zero Loss

By Leo Reyes     Mar 17, 2010 in Sports
The much anticipated Pacquiao-Mayweather match may not happen after all as Mayweather may decide to drop Manny Pacquiao for good in favor of less superior boxers in order to preserve his zero loss record.
Undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather jr, may decide not to fight Pacquiao even if he wins over Shane Mosley in their May 1 fight in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Knowing that Pacquiao will give him trouble inside the ring, Mayweather may decide to finally drop the Filipino boxer for good. If his prime consideration is to keep his zero loss record, Mayweather is better off fighting less superior boxers even if he gets just half of the prize money that he would get if he faces Manny Pacquiao in the ring.
Joshua Clottey, who just lost to Manny Pacquiao in their March 13 fight, said that the pound-for-pound king has a very good chance of beating Mayweather.
Clottey found out how evasive and fast and heavy-handed Pacquiao was at Cowboys Stadium as he opted to just cover up instead of engaging the Filipino fireball in heated exchanges for fear that he might trek the path that the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto.
“Manny Pacquiao will give Floyd Mayweather a lot of trouble,” said Clottey. “I am giving him a very good chance (of beating Mayweather).”
A good number of boxing experts and fans believe that Pacquiao has a good chance of beating the undefeated American boxer and deliver his first loss.
Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer said he is looking at the undefeated Edwin Valero for a possible fight with Pacquiao in November at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas. Roach said he is also looking at Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez as possible opponents of the popular Filipino boxer.
Freddie Roach, Bob Arum and Pacquiao believe that Mayweather is more concerned about protecting his zero loss record than facing Pacquiao even if the fight will give him a windfall in terms of prize money and resulting revenues from the fight.
