article imageToronto becomes a little Irish for the St. Patrick's Day parade Special

By Andrew Moran     Mar 14, 2010 in Entertainment
Toronto - A gloomy, cold day in Toronto didn't stop thousands of people in the downtown core to enjoy the city's St. Patrick's Day parade that went from St. George Street and Bloor Avenue to Nathan Phillips Square.
The 23rd annual St. Patrick’s Day parade took place on Sunday in Toronto at noon, even though thousands of attendees braved the cold, brisk weather. Nevertheless, Torontonians were all a little Irish during the parade as the elderly, toddlers, teenagers and pets wore green hats, scarves and even dyed green hair.
More than 20 floats, hundreds of musicians, dozens of dancers and public figures paraded from St. George Street and Bloor Street all the way to Nathan Phillips Square at Queen Street and Bay Street.
Declan Kelly, Irish Ambassador to Canada, was among those present as he was in the backseat of a vehicle, while recognizable Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion led the way as Grand Marshal.
“Mayor McCallion is without a doubt one of the most recognizable and popular local political figures, dare we say worldwide, and has always been a great supporter of the Irish in Southern Ontario,” stated the official Toronto St. Patrick’s Day parade website.

Even though St. Patrick’s Day is officially celebrated on March 17, green beer was floating around as one member of Steam Whistle said some pubs are offering free samples of their beer before the big day on Wednesday.
Majority of the major roads in downtown Toronto were closed on Sunday, which made it quite difficult for drivers to go through the city.
The parade was preceded by a 5-kilometer run.
