During the festivities of the newly elected Chilean President, three strong aftershocks struck the South American nation. The aftershocks were measured between 6.0 and 7.2.
After Sebastian Pinera is set to be
sworn in on Thursday as the President of Chile, three fierce aftershocks occurred in the South American country, according to
Reuters. The first one was measured at 7.2 magnitude, the second one was a 6.9 magnitude aftershock and the third one was 6.0 magnitude.
The nation’s navy issued a tsunami warning after the aftershocks hit the region, reports
CBC News.
The largest aftershock had a depth of 21.7 miles and was located 70 miles west of Rancagua and just 95 miles southwest of Santiago, according to the
United States Geological Survey.
Geophysicist Don Blakeman of the USGS explained, reports the
Associated Press, that the size of February’s earthquake would lead to more, strong aftershocks such as Thursday’s, “It's not a sign of anything different happening. But what does occur when you get these large aftershocks, typically we have a whole series of aftershocks again
