Tel Aviv - The Australian Federal Police has been involved in an embarrassing incident in Tel Aviv, within 12 hours of arriving to investigate the use of fake Australian passports. They reportedly hit a female cyclist and failed to offer assistance.
Their speeding silver SUV apparently struck cyclist, Oshra Bar, a twenty two year old political activist. She escaped injury despite her bike being damaged. The embassy is assuring people that an investigation was underway despite the driver, an Israeli employed by the embassy, denying hitting the woman.
Bar has told The Age, “I feared for my life” as she saw the armoured Toyota Prado hurtling towards her. She says the car sped away without stopping and assured The Age, “they knew he had hit me.” Israeli police have said they have not received any official complaints.
It is an embarrassing episode for the AFP which will have to take time out from their investigations to be interviewed. Their trip is to investigate the use of Australian passports in an Israeli assassination of Hamas operative, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.
