Microsoft alert: pressing F1 key will cause cyber attack

Microsoft has issued a security advisory warning to users of Windows 2000 and XP operating systems to not press the 'F1' key if prompted by a dialog box. A March 9 fix is upcoming but users are advised to remain vigilant.

Pressing the 'F1' key on the top row of your keyboard will exploit a vulnerable hole that has been discovered by Microsoft. The threat affects millions of Windows users worldwide. This attack is a well-designed dialog box that prompts the user to press "F1" while browsing the Web. Once pressed, the threat installs software that enables the attacker to take control of the computer. Microsoft advises users not to press F1, restrict access to the Windows Help System, and to set Internet and Local intranet security zone settings to "high" to block ActiveX Controls and Active Scripting. Windows Vista and Windows 7 are not affected. Victims of the attack can contact Microsoft's Consumer Security Support Center website for information and assistance.
