Kurt Busch, a native Las Vegan, was on the pole in the 2010 Shelby American 400 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Did he manage to win?
The 1.5-mile Las Vegas track was center stage to a terrific race. Could Kevin Harvick manage to win this race, after winning the Nationwide race on Saturday?
After starting first, after less than a single lap, Kurt Busch was passed by the No. 24 car of Jeff Gordon.
A quick yellow flag was dropped on Lap 2 as Kevin Conway nudged the wall on Turn 2, sliding down the track. David Gilliland and A.J. Allmendinger, who started in the back, were the only two cars to pit.
On Lap 5 (green flag), Gordon led, followed by Ku. Busch, Ryan Newman, Kyle Busch, and Joey Logano.
During Lap 37, Jimmie Johnson passed Logano for 11th. Johnson is heard over the radio calling his car "evil," despite his climb through the field.
The second yellow flag came down on Lap 45. Mike Bliss slammed into the Turn 2 wall; Sam Hornish Jr. got the free pass and was able to continue on the lead lap. All lead-lap cars hit the pits. Ky. Busch got four tires and fuel; Greg Biffle also received four tires, along with other minor adjustments. Both Gordon and Ku. Busch got four tires and a track bar adjustment.
The green flag waved on Lap 52, yet only a lap later, another caution was out. This caution saw Gordon lose the lead and fall to fourth place. In the meantime, Biffle took the lead. This yellow flag occurred because the caution lights did not turn off. Travis Kvapil got the free pass and continued on the lead lap.
Yellow Flag No. 4 flew out on Lap 87 as Hornish Jr. spun on the frontstretch. Scott Speed got the free pass. Matt Kenseth won the race off of pit road as the leaders came in to pit. It was his first time leading the race.
Again, just as soon as the green flag waved on Lap 92, a caution occurred on Lap 93. Juan Pablo Montoya spun out after getting a bump from his teammate, Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray. With nowhere to go, Ku. Bush was also involved.
Another yellow flag waved on Lap 107 when the caution lights inadvertently turned on. We remain on the green flag for some time. After green flag pit stops, the drivers came out on Lap 169 as follows: Gordon in the No. 24 Chevrolet, Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Jeff Burton, and Harvick.
On Lap 225, after continuously running on a green flag, the drivers, once again, had to pit. Gordon still controlled the lead. Tony Stewart rounded out the top five.
Only three laps later, Conway got into the Turn 2 wall, bringing out the seventh caution. Twenty-one cars remained on the lead lap. Clint Bowyer brought the field to another green flag.
Gordon and Johnson battled for the lead after passing Bowyer.
During Lap 255, Johnson opened up a 1.4-second lead on Gordon.
Jimmie Johnson won the race, his second in a row. He is now an all-time NASCAR leader: Johnson has 15 wins on 1.5-mile tracks.
