article imagePlayboy Club celebrates 50 years

By KJ Mullins     Feb 26, 2010 in Entertainment
Fifty years ago on February 29, 1960 Hugh Hefner opened the Playboy Club in Chicago. The club was a contrast to other gentlemen types with an air of sophistication and sex appeal.
The Playboy Clubs are still doing well, with two new establishments set to open in 2010 in Miami and Cancun.
Hefner's establishments had a dry spell during the 1980's and 1990's but have returned to their former glory days; in 2006 the Club at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas opened.
The Bunny Costume worn by hostesses began as a modified one-piece bathing suit. It became the first uniform to be patented.
Many famous actresses wore the suit before becoming known on the silver screen. Deborah Harry, Lauren Hutton, Julie Cobb, Lynne Moody, Sherilyn Fenn, Susan Sullivan, Jackie Zeman, Maria Richwine and Barbara Bosson were all Playboy Bunnies at one time.
In 2006 the costume was redesigned for the launch of the Palms opening. Both Jenny McCarthy and Carmen Electra have donned the latest bunny version.
In the early days Hollywood's top performers were entertained at the Clubs. Steve Allen, Bob Hope, George Carlin and Steve Martin are just a few of those who graced the stage during their first golden era earning a membership key.
Today P. Diddy, Kim Kardashian, Usher, Paris Hilton, Dennis Hopper, Dave Navarro, Jamie Presley and Michael Phelps all have their own membership key to the clubs.
