article imageOlympics: USA's Vonn and Mancusco at Odds

By Michael Bearak     Feb 25, 2010 in Sports
The downhill skiing team for Team USA has had some bad blood come to the surface between their two stars. Not that it seems to be hampering their ability to compete as well.
Lindsay Vonn has been on the cover of Sports Illustrated, she did a bikini spread while at the Olympics that was displayed on the Internet, and she has skied a few runs down Whistler while in Vancouver. She has so far won a gold and a bronze. She brought some attention to herself when the Olympics first opened and she had a bruised shin, which brought the entire Olympic competition into question. It was later reported that she had been using cheese to help heel the shin, and now it appears that she and Julia Mancuso are at odds as well.
Mancuso told Sports Illustrated that the team was all about a popularity contest and that is hurting the U.S. team. She was quoted in Sports Illustrated as saying, "People are having a hard time reaching their potential because it's such a struggle for attention. You come to meetings after races and it's like it's a bad day if Lindsey didn't do well."
When the two talk about each other they don't seem to have much to say either. One person compared the two women as the ying-and-yang of the United States' ski team. Mancuso was quoted as saying that she and Vonn don't hang out as much any more, while Vonn reflects back to their days in junior skiing.
Wednesday things got more interesting as Vonn lost control and fell getting tangled up in the safety netting and was unable to get herself free. Unknowingly Mancuso went to start her run down Whistler and was flagged for unsafe course conditions because Vonn hadn't cleared the course. It was something that wasn't either lady's fault, but it resulted in Mancuso having to wait for 13 skiers to go ahead of her before she could go and by then the conditions had gotten worse and she was 18th after her slalom run.
After her run Mancuso was seen crying, and later tweeted, "i was flagged in gs, that is [expletive]! well now its time to use that anger and fight second run!!" The tweet on the social group Twitter was later taken down. Such a posted message could lead to a fine from the IOC for criticizing the officiating.
