A Connecticut woman is facing charges after she left her 11-year-old daughter home alone while she went on a trip to Florida.
Michelle Kasseris, 33, of Killingly, Conn., initially told police her father died and she couldn't afford to take the girl with her.
According to the Hartford Courant, police believe she was in Florida with her boyfriend.
Kasseris was arraigned Tuesday in Danielson Superior Court on a charge of risk of injury to a minor. Bail was set at $25,000. The girl is now staying with her father in New York.
A parent whose child is a friend of the girl’s alerted school officials to the situation last week after the girl told his son her mother left for Florida to meet her boyfriend.
A police officer and social worker then visited the girl who first told them her mother had gone shopping, but eventually admitted her mother was in Florida.
Police then called Kasseris in Florida. They claim she didn’t see what the problem was since the girl could go to a neighbor if she needed anything.
According to police, this wasn't the first time the girl was left alone. Neighbors and friends say she frequently would go away with her boyfriend for the weekend, leaving the girl at home.
