Just six months ago the country was reeling from the comments and actions of Van Jones one of President Obama's czars. Now the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has decided to honor him for his work.
Last year Van Jones' attitude and behavior was called to light as he served as an advisor to President Obama. Jones called the Republicans, "assholes" as well as signing a petition in 2004 claiming that former President Bush was behind the 9/11 attacks, which along with other information resulted in people demanding he resign from his position, which by the end of the summer he did.
Now the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has decided to honor Van Jones and his work to develop new jobs. Former Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean was quoted as saying that Jones' resignation was a the country's loss.
Nevertheless in the 1990's Jones was a self-proclaimed Communist. Jones also made numerously racially charged comments including one about the 1999 Columbine shootings ""You've never seen a Columbine done by a black child. Never."
It was statements and actions that led to demands for Jones' resignation as well as deeper investigations into the czar program being run by the White House.
This year the NAACP has decided to award Jones with an Image Award. According to president and CEO of the NAACP, Benjamin Todd Jealous, "Van Jones is an American treasure." Jealous, who has been a supporter of Jones, credits Jones as being one of the few people to recently come up with new ideas for jobs. Jones' 2007 book, "Green Collar Economy" along with generating jobs for lower income people were two of the main reasons Jealous cited for the award.
