Olympic Diver Blake Aldridge Arrested on suspicion of shoplifting

By Laura Trowbridge     Feb 22, 2010 in Crime
Olympic diver Blake Aldridge, who partnered with current world champion Tom Daley in the 2008 Beijing Games, has been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting and attacking a security guard.
Police were alerted last Friday to an early morning disturbance outside of a Tesco store in Beckenham, south east London. 27-year-old Aldridge allegedly punched a security guard after he was caught stealing bottles of wine and alcopops.
Witnesses told police that Aldridge came into the 24-hour store with a friend around 2:30am. The athlete looked to be unsteady on his feet. The two men allegedly took two bottles of wine from the self-serve counter and some alcopops before leaving the store allegedly without paying.
When a security guard followed them outside, Aldridge was said to have punched the guard in the face giving him a bloody nose after being challenged by the guard.
His friend fled the scene before he could be caught.
Aldridge was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting and of causing actual bodily harm. He is out on bail until mid-March pending further inquiries into the incident.
Officers have been examining the CCTV footage in the store of Aldridge and his unnamed friend since Aldridge claims he thought his friend paid for the alcohol, but that he was drunk.
