Earlier this month President Obama picked out Las Vegas for the second time angering its Mayor, Governor, and others including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Today the president was in Nevada attempting to make amends.
Friday President Obama tried to set the record straight concerning his feelings towards Las Vegas. It was earlier this month that he made disparaging comments about the popular Nevada destination.
In light of the visit Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman turned down an invitation to meet the president on the tarmac or attend a City Hall event unless he had clarified his comments.
Obama acknowledged the previous statements and then attempted to make light of them joking that he had hit a flush and cut the national debt in half.
Obama went on to say, "It wasn't meant to be a shot, I think everybody here would agree that the only place where people should spend their college savings is in college."
Friday Obama also unveiled a new plan to help the hardest hit states in the mortgage crisis and foreclosures, Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, and Nevada. He said it is a $1.5 billion plan to help with the housing crisis. Nevada leads the nation in foreclosures so today's appearance was well times for the announcement of his new program.
Las Vegas was the metro area with the highest foreclosure rate in January, with one in every 82 homes receiving such a filing.
Another part of his trip is to help embattled Senators who the Republicans have taken aim and aer now considered endangered. It is believed that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is in for a tight race, but he has served as a close ally and proponent of Obama's agenda.
President Obama would finish his day with a speech at the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce before he returns to Washington, D.C.
