A man with an apparent grudge against the IRS wrote on a website saying "Mr. Big Brother IRS - take my pound of flesh" before he smashed a plane into a building in Austin, Texas. Thirteen people are injured, two seriously. One person is missing.
Austin, Texas – Two people have serious burns and one person is unaccounted for after a man with a grudge against the Internal Revenue Service smashed a small plane into a building in Austin.
The man, identified as Joe Stack, left a multi-page rant against the IRS on a website, saying: “Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let’s try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well.”
Austin emergency crew and city police issued a bulletin on Thursday afternoon saying the small plane crashed into the building at 9:56 a.m. local time. The building is located at 9430 Research Boulevard.
“A total of 13 injuries have been reported with 11 being treated at the scene and 2 transported to the hospital with critical injuries,” authorities said in their latest bulletin. One person is unaccounted for and the person’s family has been notified.
“As of now, two people have been taken to the hospital and one more is unaccounted. One of the victims was originally taken to Brackenridge but is now being transported to San Antonio as a burn victim,” said a statement.
Both burn victims are males and authorities said there is one person unaccounted for.
The Echelon building has many tenants leasing space, the city hall said. The plane was not stolen, the city said.
Authorities were able to get into the building and search floor from level one to three.
The FBI is the lead investigating agency into the crash that left parts of the building a smoldering mess. The National Transportation Board said it has investigators on the way.
Jeff Lake, who works close to the location where the plane crashed, said he went out to look and then posted what he saw on Twitter: “Yeah, I was just out there watching. The plane is completely inside the building, there’s a huge hole. Everyone is silent.”
In another tweet sent from the scene, he said: “That building is only a couple buildings over from mine! We felt the shockwave from the impact.”
Lake also posted photos from the scene of the disaster.
