article imageNew aerial photographs of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks released

By Andrew Moran     Feb 10, 2010 in World
New York - New never-before-seen aerial photographs have been released by ABC News that show the entire area engulfed with smoke from the buildings.
After a Freedom of Information Act requested by the National Institute of Standards and Technology last year, ABC News has published tragic aerial photos of the World Trade Center collapsing on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, according to the National Post.
ABC News has 13 of the 2,779 photos from the NYC Police Aviation Unit. They're available on ABC's website and included below. They show an aerial view, an up-close shot of the upper part of the World Trade Center on fire, one of the World Trade Center buildings collapsing, smoke moving like an avalanche across Manhattan and the aftermath.
The photos were taken by ex-NYPD Aviation Unit Detective Greg Semendinger who was the first in the air to search for survivors on the rooftop, while watching the collapse of the south tower.
Semendinger took three rolls of film from his Minolta camera and 245 digital shots. The detective provided the 9/11 Commission with the digital images. The New York detective told the Associated Press, “We didn't find one single person. It was surreal There was no sound. No sound whatsoever, but the noise of the radio and the helicopter. I just kept taking pictures. I almost didn't realize what I was seeing that day. Looking at it now it's amazing I took those pictures. The images are ... stunning."
Semendinger retired from the police department in 2002 after spending 20 of the 35 years in aviation and considered publishing his work in early days after Sept. 11.
The tragic events of Sept. 11 will reach its ninth anniversary will occur this year.
