article imageWhy The Boys Are Back keeps Clive Owen's creative juices flowing Special

Jan 27, 2010 in Entertainment
By Earl Dittman.
One of Hollywood's favorite leading men, the Englishman explains why he chooses to do films like The Boys Are Back (now on DVD). This week, you also have a choice of This Is It, Whip It, Surrogates, MI-5, Southland, Pawn Stars & much more on Blu-ray/DVD.
Hands down, Clive Owen is the penultimate Hollywood actor. More importantly, Owen is the most authentic, talented and unforgettable leading man in Tinsel Town today. The Coventry, England-born thespian can step into the shoes of any character he's set to portray, Owen instantly vanishes and his onscreen alter ego immediately springs to life. From compelling portrayals in some of his earlier films such as Croupier, Gosford Park, King Arthur and Derailed to stunning appearances in pop culture phenoms like Sin City, Shoot 'Em Up, Children Of Man and Inside Man to his latest role in Shine directorScott HIcks' The Boys Are Back, Owen always seems...to shine. In The Boys Are Back, Hicks' cinematic take on the true story of a biological father who must become a warm and lovable single dad come hell or waters high, the 45-year-old Owen, a married father of two daughters, always manages to make you experience the same emotions, intensity, humor and longing of the man he's playing. Although he's received several nominations from the folks at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, the voters are long overdue in allowing Owen to take one of the prestigious statuettes home with him. Hopefully, his turn in films like The Boys Are Back might help him do the trick.
As mentioned earlier, The Boys Are Back is a story rooted in fact – based on memoirs – of successful sports writer Joe Warr (Owen) who finds himself unprepared for the job of a loving, caring dad to his rambunctious six-year-old, Artie, after the untimely death of Warr's wife. He also finds himself learning to be the father to his estranged teenage son that he never was for so many years. Two sons. Zero ideas on how to run his house. It isn't long before his once quite home devolves into chaos, and Joe must decide if his parenting plan of “no rules, no chores” wasn't such a good idea after all. Directed by Oscar -winning filmmaker Scott Hicks and written for the screen by Allan Cubitt, The Boys Are Back also stars Laura Fraser, Emma Booth, Julia Blake, Nicholas Macanulty and George MacKay and is an uplifting and heartwarming drama filled with so enough emotional honesty and poignancy that it will tough your heart and life your spirits.
Always impeccably dressed in a dark designer suit (Owen actually considered taking on the James Bond role when Pierce Brosnan left the film franchise, but Clive didn't want to commit from being away from his family for such long stretches of time that the series required), Clive sat down on a lounger in the sitting room of his posh Beverly Hills hotel suite to discuss his new film, his love of acting, taking his own kids to work with him, why he wanted to act and what still keeps him his creative juices flowing.

How do you deal with being famous and raising kids?
“Very carefully. (laughs) But it’s strange when your children know about what I do for living because my name is being tossed about in the press or we’re being followed by the paparazzi. All of that is fine, but it’s strange when you have your kids with you. It becomes something else. You’re very instinctively protective. I mean, after me, that’s the deal. That’s what I do, that’s the deal. You expect it. You go out to town and go to restaurant, that’s the deal. When you’re with your kids outside of their school, there’s something different about it. It’s an instinctive protection thing that rises.”
Do you ever take your kids the set, so they can watch dad work?
“They come to a few of my sets, but don’t forget that most of my films, like Sin City or Shoot 'Em Up, they can’t watch.” (laughs)
Do your girls ever say, “Dad, when are you going back to work?”
(Laughs) “Luckily, not. They only ever say, ‘When are you going?’”
What made you interested in acting?
“I did school plays and liked it.”
How old were you?
“Twelve or thirteen.”
Did your parents think that you were crazy?
“They thought that I would get real at some point, everyone did. I used to sit in career day and people would ask me what I was going to do, and I’d say that I was going to be an actor and they’d just laugh at me. They would be like, ‘Get real,’ and I would say, ‘No. That’s what I’m going to do.’”
When you think back at your early film Croupier, is it the movie that really brought you to America’s attention?
“Oh yeah, that changed my whole life.”
What’s the biggest misconception about Hollywood that you had when you were doing Croupier and still working mainly in London?
“I think that it’s very difficult. I think that I’m very fortunate because once Croupier broke, it was a different world. It was a different world that I was invited into that wasn’t the same guy that was doing little British films. It’s tough and it’s soul destroying. It’s hard and that is one particular world. And then things break and people see your work, it’s all about the work and people see it and then you’re invited into a different world. It’s impossible for me to be cynical about Hollywood because I’ve had a great time. I’m working with fantastic people and there’s nothing to be cynical about.”

image:62313:1::0
What about the downside to all the fame?“I’m not talking about fame. I’m only talking about the work. That’s the deal that comes with it and you just have to deal with it whatever that is. That is the deal. The thing that’s always driven is the work and the interesting thing is that as more choices come your way you get to the point that you make the decision of what is you want. What do you want? I want to have a fulfilling career. That’s what I’ve always wanted and whatever comes of that you deal with it because that’s the deal that you make. You can’t then complain about it or moan about what comes with it because that’s what you do. You put yourself out there.”
(Director/Writer) Frank Miller said that he finished a script for Sin City 2. Have you seen it yet?
“No. No, I haven’t.”
Are you excited to hear about the sequel is close to becoming a reality?
“They’ve been talking about Sin City 2 since Sin City 1, so I have no idea. (laughs) I know Frank but I have no idea where the state of play is on making that. I mean, it literally has been talked about for years and at various times people have said there’s a story with Dwight in it, but I know literally as much as you do.”
That’s why it’s a big script that he’s finished.
“Well, I’ve yet to see who’s in it and who’s going to make it and the rest of it, so as I say, you know more than me. I didn’t know it was finished.”
What was the worst audition you ever had?
“There were quite a few. There were quite a few. The days when I used to come to LA with a very small little film, like I’d come on the back of some tiny film that had a tiny distribution like Close My Eyes or Bent, going around and doing the rounds then was pretty tough because you were meeting the assistant of the assistant of the assistant who asks you questions like, ‘Do you play goodies or baddies?’ Or the common one was, ‘So, you do a lot of theater.’ It was pretty soul destroying, I must admit.”
Sin City and Shoot ‘Em Up were dramatic but they felt comic, too. Are there any other graphic novels or comics that interest you?
“No, I mean, I wasn’t really familiar with graphic novels until I did Sin City, and then I saw Frank Miller’s work and was blown away by it. It’s so cinematic, his drawings, but no, so I went into that because of what I saw of his work and Robert Rodriguez and the rest of it. Shoot ‘Em Up I did because it was so crazy and original, but there is no graphic novel that I’m desperate to do.”
Any interest in directing films?
“I think about directing, but again, it’s such a different rhythm from acting that again, there is no script that I’ve suddenly gone, ‘I would love to direct that.’ I do flirt with the idea of directing, and I just would need to find something. The rhythm of a director is a two-year cycle as opposed to a few months for an actor. “
Bob Hoskins said directing was like being pecked to death by 1000 pigeons every day.
“No, I think directing, ultimately, I think it all comes down to taste in all aspects of what a film is, and the coming together of it. It’s having, I think Scott Hicks has got exquisite taste.”
Do you do anything Green?
“Yes, I’m actually doing a lot of renovation, and we are very much into looking for the most responsible way to do it.”
Solar panels?
“Exactly, all of that, yeah.”

How do you stay excited and juices you up about acting, and not become jaded after doing for so many years?
“Maybe, a few years ago, I got into a situation where I maybe did three films back-to-back, and I realized I really hate that rhythm. I think you’ve got to have appetite and to jump from one film to the other, one, it doesn’t give you enough time to prepare properly and two, you get tired and that’s not good. The rhythm for me in the last couple years in these films, there have been proper gaps between where there’s been time to talk and prepare and get in the right place. I’ve also been blessed to have worked with some amazing talents – both with my costars and all the people behind behind the cameras, like our director Scott Hicks. Those are the kind of people that I dream about working with and juices me up, because I know that the people I’m working for have incredible taste. There’s a confidence going in that you’re going to be very well looked after and there’s a good chance that the film will turn out well, so that keeps me very juiced.”

Whip It
Whatever E.T. whispered into the ear of young, seven-year-old Drew Barrymore when they were making E.T. back in 1982, it was some darn good advice – especially if it pertained to the subject matter of her first full-fledged, directorial debut 27 years in the future. I mean, is there really an agent or manager smart enough in LaLa Land who has brass ones big enough to steer her into making a hysterical, actioned-packed, coming-of-age movie about the world of female roller derby teams? Only an alien ( in desperate need of a yet-to-be-invented cell phone) could have come up with such an original motion picture; Casting Oscar-nominee Ellen Page, the memorable heroine of Juno in the lead role of Whip It, she scores huge laughs as Bliss Cavendar, a blue-haired misfit stuck in a tiny Texas town. Tired of following in her family's footsteps, Bliss discovers a way to put her life on the fast track when she lands a spot on a rough-and-tumble roller derby team. Her journey comes full-circle as she reconnects with her family and finds her own path in the world. Filled with high-speed action and nonstop fun, the film sports an all-star cast that also includes such award nominees Drew Barrymore (who just scored a well-deserved Emmy for Grey Gardens) Marcia Gay Harden, Juliette Lewis, Daniel Stern and Jimmy Fallon. And if that's not enough, Whip It also features cameo appearances by real-life derby girls Rachel Piplica and Kristen Adolfi, better known as "Iron Maiven" and "Krissy Krash" of the Los Angeles Derby Dolls. (Also on DVD) Bonus Features on Blu-ray: Alternate opening, Deleted and extended scenes, Writers draft with Shauna Cross and a Digital Copy of the film.

Little Ashes
From playing the teenage bloodsucking pinup vamp in the Twilight series to the 20th Century's most avand-grade, artistically-controversial and sexually-ambiguis artist of his generation, Robert Pattinson's latest performance demonstrates he is more than a one-trick-pony. He's finally being considered a serious, passionate actor thanks to his role as Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dali in director Paul Morrison's docudrama Little Ashes. Set in Madrid in 1922 – a city wavering on the edge of change as traditional values are challenged by the dangerous new influences of jazz – Salvador Dalí arrives at university determined to become a great artist. With a bizarre blend of shyness and rampant exhibitionism, Dali attracts the attention of two of the university's social elite -- Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltran) and Luis Buñuel (Matthew McNulty). But as the three explore the art world together, a forbidden attraction develops which changes their lives forever. Luis and Federico become a formidable trio, the most ultra-modern group in Madrid. However, as time passes, Salvador and Lorca. set off for Paris. Alone in Madrid, Lorca is haunted by news of Salvador, who is collaborating on a Surrealist film with Buñuel and has embarked on an affair with Gala, a married woman. Time passes, and in 1936, with Spain teetering on the precipice of civil war, Lorca is assassinated. And when Dali finds out, the walls of self-denial that surround him come crashing down as he realizes, too late, the depth of his love for Lorca. Bonus Features: Interviews with the cast/director and “The Making of Little Ashes: featurette.

MI-5: Volume 7
Lucas North (Richard Armitage), after having spent eight torturous years in a Russian prison after the secret police had arrested him for being a member of England's premiere intelligence gathering government organization MI-5 (the Brit's version of the CIA), is welcomed back to MI-5, with proverbial opened arms, by the head of MI-5, his old pal and brother-in-arms, old Harry Pearce (Rupert Penny-Jones), who was instrumental in finally securing Lucas' release from the Russians. Now that he is out, Lucas is incredibly anxious to get back to work as quickly as possible. He may just be in luck since Section D's current priority operation has an incredibly strong Russian connection, so he could very well prove even more invaluable to his mates at MI-5. However, there is some doubt, even among his oldest, best friends as to his to where his true loyalties lie. After having spent eight years with only a high-ranking Russian spymaster to talk to and share his feelings with, can Lucas's loyalty really be taken for granted? A winner of multi-BAFTA Award (the English equivalent of the Oscar/Emmy), MI-5 is back with another season (also starring Anna Chancellor, Nicola Walker, Peter Firth and Hermione Norris) completely packed with even more topical stories of deadly terrorists, undercover operations and double-agents – with a heavy dose of danger and death always looming above them. Surrogates
There is no actor who plays cops, military men, CIA agents or FBI operatives like Bruce Willis can. From the moment he appears on the screen, Brucie simply oozes authority – mostly of the law enforcement kind. Let's face it, Willis expertly plays one government employee (of the no B.S. ilk) that you don't ever want to run into on a dark deserted alley – especially if you are a surrogate. In the gripping, action thriller directed thriller by Terminator 3 filmmmaker Jonathan Mostow, people are living their lives remotely from the safety of their own homes via robotic surrogates – sexy, physically perfect mechanical representations of themselves. It’s an ideal world where crime, pain, fear, killing and consequences doesn’t exist. However, when the first murder in years jolts this utopia – a college stundent linked by the creator of these replicants is killed – FBI agent Greer (Willis) discovers a vast conspiracy behind the surrogate phenomenon and must abandon his own surrogate, risking his life to unravel the mystery. Based on the futuristic graphic novel by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, Surrogates also stars Rahda Mitchell, Rosumand Pike, James Cromwell, and Ving Rhames, and Rosamund Pike. But in a battle versus humanity, who can you really trust? (Also on DVD) Bonus Features on Blu-ray: Feature commentary from director Jonathan Mostow, “A More Perfect You: The Science Of Surrogates” and “Breathing The Frame: A Graphic Novel Comes To Life” featurettes, deleted scenes, and “I Will Not Bow” music video by Benjamin.

Pawn Stars: The Complete Season 1
One of the most entertaining and original slices of cable programming, Pawn Stars is a funny, often poignant and sometimes heartbreaking reality series. Long before banks, ATMS, check-cashing services and even credit cards, there were neighborhood family-owned business known as pawn shops. Pawning was the leading form of consumer credit in the United States until the 1950s, and pawn shops are still helping everyday people make ends meet. At the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop on the outskirts of Las Vegas, three generations of Harrisons jointly run the family business, and there's clashing and camaraderie every step of the way. On Pawn Stars, you can witness as they use their sharp eyes and finely-honed skills to assess the value of items from the commonplace to the truly historic -- including a 16th-century samurai sword, a Super Bowl ring, a Picasso painting and a 17th-century stay of execution -- it's up to them to determine what's real and what's fake, because everything and everyone has a story and in this business the customer isn't always right. A wonderful bit of guilty viewing pleasure, you have seen reality television until you've seen Pawn Stars. Bonus Features: “Meet the Pawn Stars” and “Real or Fake” featurettes and additional footage.

JFK: 3 Shots That Changed America
From the director of the Emmy-winning 102 Minutes That Changed America, JFK: 3 Shots That Changed America is an acclaimed History Channel special which follows in the footsteps of such highly-regarded programs as The Men Who Killed Kennedy. Culled from hours of unseen film, tape recordings, and rare firsthand accounts of President Kennedy's death, History cuts through the wild conspiracy theories and presents a unique fact-based approach to the Kennedy assassination. Using firsthand, primary source material, JFK: 3 Shots That Changed America strips away years of confusion to allow for a fresh and clear-eyed view of that historic day in November 1963, when a gunman pulled a trigger and forever changed the world. This four-hour special, which drew over 2MM viewers, relies heavily on evidence and facts, exploiting the vast archive of recorded film and photography and presenting it alongside the testimony of eyewitnesses, and is shown as a countdown clock re-creation, ticking inevitably toward Zero Hour -- the very moment rifle shots ring out in Dealy Plaza

The Kennedy Assassination: 24 Hours Later
While the moments and hours after John F. Kennedy's tragic assassination were some of the most formative and important for our country, that story has rarely, and only partially, been told. Based on the bestselling book by Steven M. Gillon, The Kennedy Assassination: 24 Hours Later is a thoroughly fascinating near real-time account of this pivotal day in history told from the point-of-view of Vice President Lyndon Johnson that uses stunning details uncovered in newly public documents to reveal a vice president thrust into the role of commander-in-chief forced to make critical decisions with limited information. From the moment Lyndon B. Johnson was told of JFK's death (after a security aide had already ordered a casket), to his decision to take the oath of office on Air Force One alongside the former First Lady (before getting her approval), to the return to his home for a full briefing of what happened that day (long after it was televised to the world), 24 Hours Later uncovers a shocking and little documented story examining the unusual incidents and events surrounding one of the most critical days in American history.

Michael Jackson's This Is It
It's a shame that we will never get to see any of the 100 shows Michael Jackson had planned for London -- actually performed live by MIchael. But This Is It comes really, really close to making that dream a reality. Whether you liked his music or hated it -- if you found his over-the-top eccentric behaviour too much to bear or just plain fun to watch – none of that matters, because from what we see from the footage from the final rehearsals is that This Is It would have indeed been one of the most incredible series of shows this planet has ever seen. In addition to the fantastic direction and choreographer Kenny Ortega (of High School Musical fame) did for the planned concerts, he has pieced together one of the greatest music documentaries since Woodstock: Three Days Of Peace, Love & Music. Taking viewers on the rocky voyage of how the concerts transformed from an idea, to a concept to a full-fledged show, you're blown away by the time, talent and effort it took to put the show together. We hear a lot from all those involved with show, particularly those performers, singers, dancers that will never get to perform with Michael in sold-out areanas -- Eric Reid, Alex Al, Nick Bass, Daniel Celebre, Mekia Cox, Misha Gabriel, Chris Grant, Judith Hill and Shannon Holtzapffel – but luckily, there talented and their time with the King Of Pop will for always be preserved on this Blu-ray/DVD collections. This Is It is Michael Jackson at his finest, and sadly enough, final hours. (Also on DVD) Bonus Features: 2 “Making Of” Documentaries, Three Featurettes: “The Gloved One” - costumes, “Memories Of Michael” and “Auditions: Searching For The World's Best Dancers.” BD-LIVE EXCLUSIVES: “Thriller” and “Smooth Criminal” vignettes, “Making Smooth Criminal” featurette and MOVIEIQ – This Is It playlist.

Southland: The Complete First Season
In one of the most brilliant primetime moves in the past decade, cable channel TNT bravely and wisely picked up the hard-hitting, groundbreaking LAPD series Southland after it was dropped from NBC's schedule last year and TNT has now made it a part of its regular programming. Buy these guys a drink. They don't get much better than Southland, produced by John Wells, former ER and West Wing producer. A raw and authentic look at the police unit in Los Angeles, Southland is a fast-moving drama that explores the lives of cops, criminals, victims and their families, Southland features a highly talented ensemble cast led by Ben McKenzie (The O.C.), Michael Cudlitz (Band of Brothers) and Regina King (24). Southland: The Complete First Season contains the first seven episodes, in their uncensored form, as they follow the complicated lives dedicated LAPD officers and detectives lead as the series take on criminals, victims and a city tainted by vice and seething with danger. The rookie cop and his savvier, veteran colleagues try to make a difference in the not so glamorous part of Hollywood, but as one wised-up cop says, “Every once in a while, you get to take a bad guy off the street for good. And that, my friend, is God’s work.” While the pilot premiered this week, in addition to the six others on the DVD, TNT will air the additional Season One episodes that never made it onto the primetime schedule, later this spring. If you are looking for television at its absolute best, pick up these seven, unedited episodes from Season One, watch the rest of the season on TNT and get ready for another great season later in the year. You won't be sorry. Bonus Feature:Southland: Redefining The Cop Drama” -Producers and cast reveal the story behind creating a new series about the LAPD.

Soul Power
In 1974, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Africa for a 12-hour, three-night long concert held in Kinshasa, Zaire. The dream-child of Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine, this music festival became a reality when they convinced boxing promoter Don King to combine the event with “The Rumble in the Jungle,” the epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, previously chronicled in the Academy Award-winning documentary When We Were Kings. Soul Power is a verité documentary about this legendary music festival (dubbed “Zaire ‘74”), and it depicts the experiences and performances of such musical luminaries as James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, among a host of others. At the peak of their talents and the height of their careers, these artists were inspired by this return to their African roots, as well as the enthusiasm of the Zairian audience, to give the performances of their lives. Bonus Features - DVD/ Blu-ray: Archival footage of music legends James Brown, B.B. King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, deleted footage and commentary with director Jeffrey Levy-Hinte & festival co-producer Stewart Levine
