article imageChrysler rumored to merge with Lancia

By Michael Bearak     Jan 21, 2010 in Business
In an interview with Britain's autocar.co.uk, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, who is also the current CEO of Chrysler, said Chrysler and Lancia could blend together by the end of 2010.
Lancia is owned by Fiat.
What Marchionne sees is a complete line of cars for the two groups. While Lancia has nothing larger than a small hatchback, Chrysler had nothing small like a hatchback.
Marchionne has no intentions of bringing the Lancia name to the United States, but he did say the two brands were easy to redesign.
At the 2010 Detroit Auto Show a Lancia Delta, which is a compact hatchback, was given the Chrysler grille and logo. The plan is to use the auto show and gauge people's responses to the car.
Chrysler is planning on discontinuing the P.T. Cruiser and Sebring so the retooled Lancia line could serve as an easy replacement.
