If you get a text or an email with an appeal for a donation to Haiti, take heed. A recent report by Newsvine.com, as well as fraud alerts from the FBI provide important information that you should consider before clicking, replying, or forwarding.
If you are going to make a donation, rather than making one electronically, you may wish to send a check to an organization that you know is working to aid Haitians.
If you suspect that you have been the victim of a scam, contact your bank or your creditor immediately to dispute the charges. The FBI, Newsvine, and the CBC have suggestions for avoiding a scam.
