Op-Ed: The Good and Bad side of Jan 08 NBA games

By Michael Ngugi Kimani     Jan 9, 2010 in Sports
The MVP of the day goes to Jerryd Bayless of Portland Trail Blazers. He started on the bench, played for 21 minutes and scored 21 points.
Miami Heat 109 – Phoenix Suns 103
Good
The Heat began their first of the next six games on the road on a winning note. Dwayne Wade had a good night that ended with a vital win.
Bad
Anytime the Suns point guard Steve Nash is locked down by their opponents, the Suns really struggle to win. This was one of those occasions.
Dallas Mavericks 112 – San Antonio Spurs 103
Good
The Mavericks win against their archrivals was a powerful indicator that they are the best in Texas this season.
Bad
Nothing is as bad as a team losing at home at the hands of you next-door neighbours. The Spurs were the home team.
Atlanta Hawks 93 - Boston Celtics 85
Good
Before this game, someone wrote an article saying that the Hawks have a golden opportunity to perch in their lost glory if they win their next three games. All I can say is one down, two to go.
Bad
When the Celtics watch the video replay of this game, they will certainly notice that the Hawks did the damage in the third quarter. The Celtics scored 14 points and conceded 29 points.
Milwaukee Bucks 96 - Chicago Bulls 93
Good
The third straight win for the Bucks has done well to shield them in the playoff contender’s zone.
Bad
The Bucks celebrated their three game winning streak on a day which the Bulls succumbed to a three game losing streak.
Toronto Raptors 108 - Philadelphia 76ers 106
Good
The win restores the Raptors confidence that had alienated itself a while ago.
Bad
Iverson had his highest score of 22 points since returning to the 76ers. Although it’s a good thing, most people won’t notice it because they lost the match.
Washington Wizard 104 - Orlando Magic 97
Good
The Wizard poured their hearts out two times. The first instance came before the match when they deeply apologized to their fans due to Arenas gun issue. The second one was seen in the 4th quarter where they rallied an incredible performance to defeat the Magic.
Bad
The reason why the Magic has lost form significantly is not quite clear. This makes it an uphill task to solve the problem.
New Orleans Hornets103 - New Jersey Nets 99
Good
The Hornets season is back on track after it had derailed. Their five game winning streak is currently the highest in the league.
Bad
The Nets know their season is over and this is making them think more about the next season, more than the current one.
Minnesota Timber wolves 116 – Indiana Pacers 109
Good
The Timber wolves knew they were hosting the Pacers who were struggling like them. With this in mind, they did what their fans expected them to do i.e. become the better strugglers.
Bad
Any time a team loses against a bottom placed team, they face the wrath of their fans. The Pacers should brace themselves for this.
Memphis Grizzlies 91 - Utah Jazz 89
Good
The Grizzlies’ desire of getting a playoff spot sometimes goes up and other times it goes down. Their win against the Jazz swung their desire upwards.
Bad
The Jazz needs a shooting forward. C.J Miles who was on the start list, he played for 25 minutes without a single basket.
Golden State Warriors 108 - Sacramento Kings 101
The Warriors remarkably brought down the Kings at their own palace. What a way to prepare before hosting the King himself, Le Bron James and his team mates, in their next game.
Portland Trail Blazers 107 - LA Lakers 98
Good
In all the wins the Blazers have recorded this season, their fans will remember this one for a very long time. No one will be surprised if the Blazers make the final eight in their conference standings at the end of the regular season.
Bad
The Lakers loss is the last thing they wanted after losing to the Clippers in the game that preceded this one.
Denver Nuggets 99 - Cleveland Cavalier 97
Good
The Nuggets triumph over the Cavaliers is unquestionably good news. C. Anthony, who is out injured, must have enjoyed this game from where he was watching.
Bad
Le Bron’s teammates must really step. The King ended the game with 35 points, 24 points more than the second Cavs player who had 11 points.
MVP of the day: Jerryd Bayless of Portland Trail Blazers
Reason: He started on the bench, played for 21 minutes and scored 21 points.
