At least six police officers were killed and 15 were wounded in the southern Russian city Makhachkala as an explosion went off by a suicide bomber.
On Wednesday, a suicide bomber murdered six police officers and injured 15 others as the man detonated a bomb when the policemen lined up in the yard in the morning waiting for their directives of the day, according to ABC News. Russia's North Caucasus republic of Daghestan has seen an increase in violence over the past year, which has been fueled by Islamic militants and poverty.
Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty reports that the suicide bomber detonated 70 kilograms of explosives in his car when a police vehicle blocked him from entering the police station, which prompted Daghestan's Deputy Interior Minister Magomed Isayev to say that the police officers who blocked the vehicle saved the lives of many others.
Isayev issued a statement that said, “Their vehicle was on the territory of the station, behind the gates, and at the moment they were opening the door, their vehicle blocked the terrorist's car that was trying to drive into the territory of the battalion. As a result, they prevented the car from penetrating the area where guards were being posted.”
The local police chief said that the officers who sacrifice their lives prevented major casualties, “The officers gave their lives to prevent a terrorist attack with an even greater number of victims.”
The bombing, notes Deutsche-Welle, was very similar to one that occurred in August in a neighboring republic, which killed 24 people and injured more than 200.
