article imageNewark airport to be first in area to get full body scanners

By Owen Weldon     Jan 2, 2010 in World
Newark liberty airport is getting full-body scanners that reveal all. The machines could keep terrorists like the underwear bomber from boarding planes.
The full-body scanners are going too be placed at terminal B, which handles all international arrivals and domestic airlines such as Delta and Northwest, according to the Port Authority.
On Christmas day suspected Al Qaeda terrorist Umar Abdulmutallab tried to bring down a Northwest airlines flight as it was landing in Detroit by detonating a bomb stashed in his underwear.
John Kelly, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said that the new passenger screening spaces in terminal B accommodate future TSA equipment deployments.
Kelly said that the TSA will decide how many machines the airport will get and when they will be installed.
According to sources the airport was chosen because it is one of the country's busiest airports and because one of the Sept.11, 2001, hijackers left from there.
The ACLU raised objections to the scanners, saying that the machines are a violation of passenger privacy.
The fliers last night said that they are willing to trade some privacy for protection. One flier said that she has nothing to hide and that the safety measurements does not bother her. Another passenger said that he would rather be safe than sorry.
There are around 40 scanners in place as backup systems in major domestic hubs and 150 more are on order.
The CEO of Delta airlines gave a message to his employees saying that they should not blame him for the near catastrophe. He said that it was not the airlines felt for the incident, it was the feds felt.
Richard Anderson said that the airline has followed every government security rule since the 9/11 attacks to keep passengers safe.
The feds are trying to figure out how the suspected terrorist managed to get on the flight out of Amsterdam even after his own father warned officals he was a muslim fanatic.
The president is calling a major meeting of agency heads on Tuesday too find out what went wrong.
