NCAA: Northwestern Falls Short in Overtime

The Northwestern Wildcats and the Auburn Tigers squared off in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida and both teams were challenged in overtime.
The Northwestern Wildcats and the Auburn Tigers battled each other for the Outback Bowl trophy at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The Auburn Tigers are out of the South Eastern Conference and the Northwestern Wildcats arrived out of the Big Ten Conference. Both teams were prepped and ready as this game got under way.
The Auburn Tigers quickly put up 14 points with a 1 yard Kodi Burns run and a 100 yard interception return by Walter McFadden. The Wildcats finally got on the board later in the first quarter with a 39 yard touchdown pass to Andrew Brewer, but the Tigers were the only team to score in the second quarter ending the first half up 21-7.
The Wildcats scored the next two touchdowns to tie the game 21-21 in the third quarter, but both teams scored two touchdowns each in the fourth quarter to push this game into overtime. The Wildcats won the coin toss and elected to play defense first and the Tigers kicked a 21 yard field goal. The Wildcats kicker had a chance to tie the game, but missed the field goal.
The Wildcats received a second chance after the Tigers were called for roughing the kicker. Northwestern team had a chance to win the game, but was stopped three straight times and was shut down on a fake field goal try.
Wildcats’ quarterback Mike Kafka threw for 532 yards completing 47 of 78 passes for 4 touchdowns, but threw 5 interceptions. Auburns' Chris Todd passed for 235 yards and a touchdown on 20 of 31 passing and had help from fellow tailback Ben Tate with 20 carries for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns to beat the Wildcats 38-35.
