By Leo Reyes     Dec 31, 2009 in Crime
Saudi Arabia's neighbor Yemen is slowly becoming a popular staging arena for militant al-Qaeda terrorists before they are set off to western destinations to sow terror after months of indoctrination by the terrorist organization.
Yemen is becoming a popular staging country for international terrorism by radicalized al-Qaeda militants who undergo psychological and ideological indoctrination in mosques around the world where Muslim extremists are active with their terrorism agenda.
Yemen's Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi is calling on countries with the capability of of neutralizing terrorists with their sophisticated equipment and intelligence database to extend their assistance and support to help train counter-terrorist forces in Yemen
His plea came after an al-Qaeda group based in Yemen claimed responsibility for the failed Christmas Day airliner bomb plot.
Following is his statement on the increasing number of known terrorist in Yemen who are linked the al-Qaeda terrorist organization:
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, alleged to be behind the attempt to blow up an American-bound aircraft, spent time in Yemen with al-Qaeda and was in the country only days before the failed attack.
Dr al-Qirbi said: “Of course there are a number of al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen and some of their leaders. We realize this danger.
“They may actually plan attacks like the one we have just had in Detroit. There are maybe hundreds of them — 200, 300.”
Dr al-Qirbi said it was the “responsibility” of countries with strong intelligence capabilities to warn states such as Yemen about the movements of terror suspects.
Dr. al-Qirbi's statement on the presence of al-Qaeda-linked terrorist in Yemen came in the wake of news reports about some 25 British-born Muslim militants who had undergone indoctrination in different mosques in the United Kingdom.
These British-born militants will likely be sent to Yemen for 'training' by al-Qaeda forces before they are deployed, media reports say.
