article imageCollege Football: Bobby Bowden Runs His final Practice

By Michael Bearak     Dec 30, 2009 in Sports
Today was the last practice for Bobby Bowden and his Florida State Seminoles prior to their Gator Bowl match-up with West Virginia.
Most seasons this practice for Bobby Bowden was just the last one of the season prior to their bowl game and the usual off-season work ahead of him. This year though it is different, this was Bowden's last game and that made this last practice of 2009 the last of his career.
Not every bowl game has been this way for Bobby Bowden and the Seminoles either. People were making the 2-hour drive from Tallahassee to Jacksonville to bid their coach farewell. He was even the Grand Marshall of a parade earlier Thursday.
What was Bowden thinking of all of this extra attention? "I appreciate everything they're doing," Bowden told ESPN. "But if we were playing for the national championship, I'd probably say I can't do all this."
Before the Gator Bowl on Friday he is going to lead a Seminole parade onto the field of former players. The Gator Bowl and the city of Jacksonville have made it possible for over 300 former Seminole players to attend their coach's last game.
Bobby Bowden and head coach-to-be Jimbo Fisher have both been telling the players to remain focused as there is a game at hand and not to be distracted by all the commotion surrounding it.
"Every bowl game I've ever been to, no matter how good a team you have, you have one guy that comes in late or one knucklehead that does something wrong," Fisher said. "So far, we've been good. Our kids have acted good. And by the way they've practiced and their work ethic, I think they've approached it the right way."
So for Bowden and the rest of the team focused on West Virginia, when he donned his gold FSU sweatshirt, garnet FSU jacket and a white hat with that same FSU logo the thoughts were on the Gator Bowl game at hand and not that this was his the last Florida State practice he was going to be running.
