article imageBen Stein calls Ron Paul's viewpoint 'anti-Semitic' on CNN

By Andrew Moran     Dec 29, 2009 in Politics
Economist and former Presidential Speechwriter Ben Stein was on CNN's "Larry King Live" to discuss the recent terrorist attempt on a Northwest Airlines jet and after Congressman Ron Paul gave his assessment, Stein labelled it as "anti-Semitic."
On Tuesday, Republican Congressman Ron Paul, Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Economist Ben Stein appeared on Larry King’s program to discuss United States President Barack Obama’s speech, the attempted terrorist attack and a key nation now in the war on terror: Yemen.
Since becoming a Congressional Representative, Doctor Paul has always been in favor of a non-interventionist foreign policy and to bring troops home from all parts of the world, which, according to Paul, is a motivating factor for global resentment and terrorism against the US.
During a 2008 Republican Primaries Fox News debate, the author of “Revolution: A Manifesto” brought the same issue up and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani said it was an “unbelievable, extraordinary statement.”
Once again, Paul met the same kind of argument but with Stein, according to The New American. Paul, a flight surgeon during the war in Vietnam, pegged the question: why? Why did 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab try to blow up the Northwest Airlines jet? The obstetrician and gynaecologist said it was because the US military forces bombed Yemen, or at least assisted the joint Saudi-Yemeni forces, earlier this month.
“Usama bin Laden said that he has a plan for America. First, he wants to bog us down in the Middle East in a no-win war. He wants to bankrupt this country, demoralize us, as well as have us do things that motivate people to join his radical movement. It seems like we have fallen into his trap.”
Stein responded by saying, reports Liberty Maven, that he has never heard such an argument in his whole life, “What he's basically saying is that we are doing something wrong by defending ourselves. Look, if these terrorists are trying to kill the government of Yemen, we've got to help defend them. They are our friends.”
Once again, Paul tries to receive an answer on why terrorists are targeting the US and Stein retorted, “They're terrorists and murderers because they are psychos. They're terrorists and murderers because they are psychos, same as all terrorists and murderers.”
However, the 1988 Libertarian Presidential candidate said because the US is an occupying force and Stein rejected the notion, “No we’re not occupies that’s the same anti-Semitic argument we hear over and over again.”
Paul was perturbed by the “vicious attack” and called for an apology but Stein said Paul should apologize.
