The actors of Glee sing the praises of the hit song-&-dance TV series -- now out on DVD. You can also spend New Year’s Eve with Jennifer’s Body, A Perfect Getaway, 9, It Might Get Loud, Spaceballs, U.S. of Tara, Marine 2, Vampire Killers & Facing Ali.
Filled with beloved characters and sensational musical numbers, television’s latest critical hit and ratings winner, Glee, is an electrifying, pitch-perfect winner the world over. Recently nominated for a handful of Golden Globe Awards (four, including Best Comedy), and another quartet of nods from the Writer’s Guild Awards (WGA), Glee is a genre-defying show filled with sharp wit, infectious musical numbers and undeniable heart. The funniest and most talked-about first 13 episodes of the inaugural season of TV's favorite is now on DVD — Glee: Season 1- Road To Sectionals.
With a cast led by veteran actors Jane Lynch (Julie & Julia, Role, Models, The-40-Year-Old-Virgin) and Matthew Morrison (Music & Lyrics, Dan In Real Life, Taking Chances), Glee is set in the fictional world of William McKinley High School — an educational institution that once boasted a championship, award-winning glee club, but over the years the club began to flounder and has become something of a joke... until an idealistic Spanish teacher, William Schuester (Morrison), surprisingly begins to spot real talent among the remaining members of a glee club now filled with wannabes, pseudo-divas and insecure but ultra-talented performers. Determined to transform the rag-tag group of singers and dancers into the champions they once were, the determined Mr. Schuester tries to convince the school’s principal and the other faculty members — like the ambitious Sue Sylvester (Lynch) — to help resurrect McKinley’s once award-winning Glee Club.
Slowly, but surely, the snobs, the geeks, the wheelchair-bound, handicapped teen and the jock all get behind Mr. Schuester (who was once a glee club star when he was younger). With new episodes of Season 2 scheduled to begin airing in early 2010, the Glee: Season 1, Vol. 1 - Road To Sectionals DVD is your chance to catch up on all the fun, singing and dancing of Season One. The creative brainchild of Ryan Murphy, the creator of Nip/Tuck, Glee also stars Jessalyn Gilsig (Nip/Tuck) and a slew of talented newcomers, including Lea Michele, Jenna Ushkowitz, Jessalyn Gilsig, Kevin McHale, Mark Salling, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer.

Lea, your character, Rachel, is so obsessed with music and with fame. When you were a kid, how much of her could you relate to?
LEA MICHELE:
"I think what's so great about Rachel is that she knows what she wants and she knows what she loves, and that's exactly how I was. When I was eight years old, I fell in love with singing, and ever since then it's been my passion. And I've been dedicated to it since I was young. And Rachel is the exact same way. So in a way I can relate to it, and I also respect and love that about her.”
Cory, could you talk about the pressure of not just learning lines, but dances and songs and all of that every week, too? Is it tough?
Lea Michele and Cory Monteith
Fox

CORY MONTEITH:
“Yeah, it was really hard, especially in the beginning, because we were learning how to work with a choreographer and shoot the show and prerecord the music, to learn the dance choreography, too. So I mean, at the beginning of the show, we were taking weeks to do some of these dance numbers. And near the end of the season, we were taking days. So I mean, everything had just gotten compacted and condense. It's a huge workload alongside eight days to shoot an episode. So it's pretty much every moment that we're not shooting the show, we're learning the dance routines or choreographing the dance routines or recording the songs. So it's a lot. It's great that it's all good stuff.”
JENNA USHKOWITZ: “Coming from, like, a theater background, I feel like we're doing so much stock theater every single week, where you're performing the show at night and rehearsing during the day for the next show or episode. So I feel like we're doing a musical and doing a TV show at the same time. It's this whole new experiment, and we're all — I think it's bonding us closer and, you know, making us work harder and learn faster because it's just so new and fresh.”
Jane or Jessalyn, do either of you have any favorite rock songs or bands that you'd like to see incorporated in the show?
JESSALYN GILSIG:
“No…well, there's our band that Jane and I are in together.”
JANE LYNCH: “Yes. We sing around set all the time. We're hoping that we'll get a song.”
JESSALYN GILSIG: “Yes.”
JANE LYNCH: “We're always whispering into their ears — singing.” (laughs)
JESSALYN GILSIG: “Uh-huh, humiliating. Gosh. Someone asked me that the other day, like, ‘If I could sing on the show, what would I sing?’ I've learned from being lucky enough to work for (creator) Ryan (Murphy) on Nip/Tuck, I learned a long time ago that whatever ideas I have are never going to be as interesting as what Ryan comes up with. My characters have shown that. So I have stopped coming up with ideas. I literally just say, ‘Let it go. I'll do it. You know me.’”

JANE LYNCH: “True. He always comes up with what's in my imagination as nowhere near what's in his. But I would like to do ‘Rose's Turn’ from Gypsy. (Begins singing) 'Momma's got to let go.' We'll do a duet.” (laughs)
Jane, you have been cast in two great comedies — Party Down and Glee. Did you end up doing Glee because it was just a matter of it getting picked up first? Do you actually prefer this role? What was the deciding factor in choosing this over Party Down?
JANE LYNCH:
“Well, I didn't choose this over that. This was in first position, as they a say, technically. But I'm thrilled to be home at Glee. I'm having the time of my life. I am acting in the role of a lifetime. And the words that I get to — they have written to come out of my mouth are some of the best of heinous things I've ever said in my life. I could not be happier. I really loved doing Party Down, but this is really a highlight.”
For Chris and Kevin, in high schools and junior highs in the chorus, choir or the theater group, the proportion between girls and boys is usually about 90 percent girls/2 percent boys. What do you love about that idea?
CHRIS COLFER:
“Less competition for one, when we were auditioning. I think that was my favorite part.”
Matthew Morrison as Mr. Schuester

KEVIN McHALE: “Me, too. I quit choir in 6th grade, so I didn't really have to think about that. But that was always the thing. I was one or two or three boys in choir, so we were kind of the default, ‘Oh, you can sing this. It's kind of low.’ But I have a girlish high voice, so I just lost anyway.”
CHRIS COLFER: “Me, too.” (laughs)
Can you relate to your characters in any way?
CHRIS COLFER:
“Well, I think Kurt probably loves that there's more girls in Glee, but then he probably hates it, too, for reasons I won't go into. But I think, yeah, he can relate to girls more than he can with guys.”
KEVIN McHALE: “Did you say are we like our characters?”
Yes.
KEVIN McHALE:
“Well, I'm really nerdy, and Artie is obviously very nerdy. I do walk. (laughs) But, no, I absolutely love playing somebody in a wheelchair. I've learned so much from it. And I just appreciate the fact that I get to get up after every take. But it's — no, it's amazing, you know? I've — I mean, I come from, like, a dancing background. So for me being able to be in a wheelchair and watch everybody else dance is kind of torture. But it's been awesome.”
CORY MONTEITH: “We always say that he's, like, the best dancer.”
LEA MICHELE: “He's the best dancer, and they have him in a wheelchair.”
Mark, I guess you can chime in on this.
MARK SALLING:
“Can I relate to my character? Well, I suppose so. My character, from the episodes I guess you've noticed, you know, he's kind of a brute but has, you know, musical aspirations just like the rest of the Glee club, and that's kind of what brings everyone to it from different backgrounds and stuff. I was kind of more of a hippie in high school, to be honest. I wrestled. I didn't play football. But, yeah, I try to make the character my own and try to implement, you know, aspects of my personality into him. So hopefully you will be seeing me in some degree.”
Jane, you were in the film Another Cinderella Story, correct?
JANE LYNCH:
“Correct.”

In that movie you played a scheming Dominique, and now you're playing a scheming arrogant coach. What is it about these type of roles that you like?
JANE LYNCH:
I'm scheming and arrogant. (laughs) You know, I don't necessarily know, but I find that kind of — I love that lack of shame, and I find it fascinating that a lot of people walk through life that way thinking they're really something and they can be that mean. And I guess I'm attracted to that on some level. I don't think it's first and foremost in my personality, but it's a lovely delicious thing to call upon, and I love doing it, obviously. I get to — I do it a lot actually, but I think it's reached a pinnacle with Sue Sylvester. She has to be the most scheming, unashamed, entitled person I've ever played, and I'm just adoring it.”
Bonus Features: Director’s cut of the pilot episode, exclusive behind-the-scenes featurettes; audition videos from the talented cast. Vampire Killers
In this witty, British horror/comedy hit — titled Lesbian Vampire Killers in the U.K. — English TV stars James Corden and Mathew Horne (of the BBC hits Gavin & Stacey and Horne & Corden) play two blundering, clueless mates who find themselves right smack dab in the middle of one bloody big adventure after leaving their homes in Essex to go on a weekend vacation in Wales and accidentally wander into the feeding ground of a group of big-breasted, fang-baring, lesbian vampire babes. Stuck in a Welsh village with a busload of hot history students that they are also trying to protect, this pair of brave and bumbling blokes certainly have their hands full — at least until dawn breaks. Not only do they have to try to survive the night and keep the students alive and breathing, they must find a way to break an ancient curse and discover some handy and quick tactics to take down as many buxom, bi-bloodsuckers as possible. It’s a tall order for these two hysterical comedians from the British Isles, but if any one can get the job done (and treat viewers to some beautiful bare vamp flesh and a load of hysterical jokes and sight gags) it’s James Corden and Matthew Horne. Vampire Killers is a load of bloody, brilliant British horror (with a heavy dose of gut-busting comedy, for good measure).

The Marine 2
In this nail-biting second installment of The Marine film franchise, WWE Superstar Ted DiBiase stars as Marine recon sniper Joe Linwood in the aptly titled The Marine 2. Inspired by a true story, shot entirely on location in Phuket, Thailand and reminiscent of the 2001 Dos Palmas incident, Linwood (DiBiase) and his wife’s trip to paradise is suddenly cut short and shattered when gun-toting, local guerillas take control of a secluded, five-star hotel/resort and demand a substantial ransom from the owners or the hotel guests will be killed one-by-one. To prove they mean business, the guerilla leaders begin murdering hostages as the hours tick away -- forcing Linwood to use his expert marksman skills to save the hostages (Temuera Morrison, Lara Cox, Robert Coleby, Michael Rooker) from certain death. Bonus Features: Behind-the-scenes fight scene footage, Making of terrorist siege sequence, Profile of Ted DiBiase (including interviews with Ted DiBiase Sr. and brother Brett), “Inside Thailand” featurette and deleted and extended scenes.

It Might Get Loud
In one of the best music documentaries of the all-time, director/producer Davis Guggenheim filmed one of the most dynamic gatherings in music history when legends Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White came together to play, compare notes and talk about music and their mutual love of the electric guitar in It Might Get Loud. Through the words and music of three generations of musicians, this brilliant film celebrates the love affair these men and countless others have with the electric guitar, perhaps the most innovative and challenging instrument ever created. But It Might Get Loud isn't like any other rock 'n’ roll documentary. Rare discussions are provoked as we travel with Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White to influential locations of their pasts. While each guitarist describes his own musical rebellion, a rock 'n’ roll summit is being arranged. Set on an empty soundstage, the musicians come together, crank up the amps and play. They also share their influences, swap stories, and teach each other songs. During the summit Page's double-neck guitar, The Edge's array of effects pedals and White's new mic, custom build into his guitar, go live. The musical journey is joined by visual grandeur too. We see the stone halls of Headley Grange where "Stairway to Heaven" was composed, visit a haunting Tennessee farmhouse where Jack White writes a song on-camera, and eavesdrop inside the dimly lit Dublin studio where The Edge lays down initial guitar tracks for U2's next single. The images, like the stories, will linger in the mind long after the reverb fades. (Also on DVD). Bonus Features: Deleted scenes, commentary with director Davis Guggenheim, producer Lesley Chilcott and producer Thomas Tull, Toronto Film Festival Press Conference with Jimmy Page, The Edge, Jack White, Davis Guggenheim, Lesley Chilcott and Thomas Tull.
