article imageOp-Ed: Mayweather Triggered a More Furious and Focused Pacquiao

By Edwin Ladaga     Dec 28, 2009 in Sports
There are reasons behind Floyd's drug testing demands in the Manny-Mayweather fight negotiations. But fans and scribes have not possibly realized, not even Mayweather Jr, that the drug testing issue would likely create a more furious and focused Pacquiao.
The major reason, as expounded by the Mayweather camp, for the Olympic style testing requirement is that Pacquiao is allegedly taking performance enhancing drugs in winning seven titles in seven different weight divisions. The unnecessary test, which is not required by the Nevada boxing commission, is meant to create a level playing field inside the ring.
The second reason, which most boxing writers allude to , is that the Olympic style testing is aimed at gaining not only a psychological edge but physical advantages by disrupting Manny's training.
The third reason, which Arum and boxing fans always point to , is that Mayweather is scared of Pacquiao and is finding a way not to face the Filipino boxing superstar.
The drug accusations have turned a polite, calm and respectful Manny into an angry Pacman ready to gobble up anyone who stands on its way. These are his words as reported by Ronnie Nathanielzs,
"Enough is enough. These people think it’s a joke and a right to accuse someone wrongly of using steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs.”
“I have instructed my promoter, Bob Arum, head of Top Rank Inc., to help me out in the filing of the case as soon as possible"
"don’t be a coward ( Floyd Jr.) and face me in the ring, mano-a-mano and shut your big, pretty mouth, so we can show the world who is the true king of the ring.”
Fans and writers who follow Pacquiao closely are very surprised with this reaction. His words are very strong. This anger that burst out into words would certainly add more power and strength into his punches come fight time.
Mayweather must have thought that an angry Manny Pacquiao would be a fighter who would lose focus in the gym and in the ring. If this is his way of thinking, then he could be in for short and terrible night when he faces the Pacman in the ring. His antics might have unexpectedly transformed the fearless Pacman into a fighter who is even more furious and focused.
