By Kristofor Molson     Dec 27, 2009 in Sports
The Pittsburgh Steelers kick a late fourth quarter field goal and the Steelers' defense holds on for a 23-20 win over Baltimore.
The Baltimore Ravens went to Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to battle the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both teams are on the verge of missing the playoffs after making it last season. Pittsburg was almost counted out of the playoffs after a loss to the Cleveland Browns.
This game was a battle from beginning to end as both teams defense could barely stop each other. Each teamed kicked early field goals to tie the game at three, but the Steelers added another one to end the first quarter 6-3. In the second quarter it was all touchdowns as the Steelers scored off of a Rashard Mendenhall 4 yard run and a Santonio Holmes 26 yard touchdown reception, but the Ravens countered with a 30 yard touchdown catch by Todd Heap.
The Steelers started the second half up 20-10, but the Ravens controlled the third quarter by being the only team to score in that quarter. The Ravens threw a second touchdown pass to Todd Heap and had kicker Billy Cundiff kick a 35 yard field goal to tie the game 20-20. Ben Roethlisberger completed 17 of 33 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown to lead the Steelers to a fourth quarter field goal to beat the Ravens 23-20.
Joe Flacco passed for 166 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception completing 13 of 25. Ray Rice led every running back in the game with 141 yards rushing on 30 carries, but didn't reach the end zone. Both teams are still in the hunt for the wild card because both teams have an 8-7 record.
