After returning from an 18-month hiatus, former world No. 1 Justine Henin will return to the game of tennis as a wildcard in the Sydney International tournament.
After announcing a comeback to the sport of Tennis back in September, Henin snow plans to play in next month’s Sydney International as a wildcard, according to the Hindustan Times
The 27-year-old Belgian will play in the tournament as part of preparations for the following week’s grand slam tournament, the Australian Open. However, she will participate at the Brisbane International event, which is approximately one week prior to the Sydney International.
Henin has won seven grand slam championships.
According to AFP, Henin said, “I have a lot of happy memories of Sydney and have won the title three times, so I am looking forward to returning in January as part of my preparation for the Australian Open. The women's draw is very impressive and it will be great to get some tough, competitive matches at the Medibank International Sydney before heading to Melbourne.”
Nine of the top 10 women’s players will be competing at the tennis tournament, notes Reuters.
Henin, who has won $19 million in career prize money, also won the event in 2004, 2006 and 2008.
