article imageFound: Missing Dutch teen who wanted to sail the world

By Stephanie Sun     Dec 20, 2009 in World
Dutch media are reporting that police on the Caribbean island of St.Maarten have found Dekker who disappeared from her father's home last Friday leaving her boat "Guppy" behind.
Laura Dekker, the 14-year-old Dutch sailor who went missing last Friday, has been found on St. Maarten in the Caribbean.
As reported earlier today by Digital Journal, Dekker went missing after Dutch courts denied her to sail solo around the world, a dream that would see her as the youngest ever sailor to ever do so.
Her parents, separated, are both experienced sailors but while her father supported her quest, her mother thought her too young to undertake such a risky adventure.
Following the court's denial, Dekker was placed under the supervision of child care authorities and was restricted from leaving the country.
The current age record for sailing solo around the world was set this past August by a 17-year-old British sailor who completed the task in nine months.
This record may soon be broken as one month later a 16-year-old Australian sailor set sail in a pink yacht with the intent to set a new record of her own.
